The “Hirn vom Hahn” science event took place in Oldenburg for the sixth time. Organized jointly by the city’s universities and research institutions, the event brings current research topics to the bars and pubs of downtown Oldenburg for an evening. Wind energy research was once again represented this year with a presentation from the living lab on Wallstraße.

Martin Dörenkämper from the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES) presented, under the title “Good Neighbors Share the Wind—European Solutions for the Future of Offshore Wind,” presented current work from Innovation Area II, “Sustainable Maritime Spatial Planning and Use of the German Bight,” of the living lab.

The focus was on scenarios and models for greater European cooperation in the expansion of offshore wind energy. In particular, the discussion centered on how offshore wind farms can be better planned and coordinated across national borders. Such approaches can help make more efficient use of available land and wind resources while also taking the interactions between neighboring wind farms more fully into account in the planning process.

Following the presentation, the audience took the opportunity to engage in an in-depth discussion and asked numerous questions about the research approaches presented and the future development of offshore wind energy in Europe.
